HVAC Questions And Answers

Note: These Are General Guidelines.

Contact A Professional Licensed Contractor With Any Questions Or Concerns

  • Does HVAC do anything other than control the temperature?

Yes. It controls humidity and cleans the air in addition to temperature control.

  • How often should I change filters? Why?

Change filters every three months unless you have pets. Depending on the type of animal, you may need to change your filter every month.

  • How often should I clean an oil furnace?

You should clean the chamber and replace the oil filter and oil nozzle annually.

  • What should I do if the temperature in my house isn’t the same as my thermostat?

    • There will be a few degree temperature swing that keeps the unit from short cycling. This is normal. Call a professional if the temperature is more than a 6-8 degree temperature swing.
    • Check the batteries in your thermometer.
  • Is there a problem if mist is coming from the indoor unit?

    • In a high humidity environment, mist may be generated due to a large temperature difference between air inlet and air outlet while in the COOL mode.
    • Dripping water may also generate on the surface of the indoor unit when cooling in a relative humidity of 80% or higher. Call a professional to adjust the horizontal louver and fan speed.
  • If you live in a community with a propane farm (tanks provided by a third party), is there a way to reduce fuel bills?

Yes. Please seek dual fuel systems and call for a consultation of how we can reduce your fuel bills/fuel consumption if you live in a community with a propane farm.

  • What should I do if a comfortable temperature can’t be achieved by my heat pump?

Heat pumps draw in air from the outdoor unit and release it via the indoor unit during heating operation. When the outdoor temperature lowers, the heat drawn in decreases accordingly. If this is an issue for you, we suggest you contact a professional to check the thermostat and the controls within the unit.

  • Is a hiss or squeaking sound cause for concern?

A low hissing sound or squeak may be heard when the compressor is running or has just stopped running. This is caused by refrigerant flowing or coming to a stop or heat expansion and cold contraction of the plastic parts as the temperature changes.

  • Is there a problem if my unit won’t start immediately as I change the thermostat?

The compressor won’t restart for 3-4 minutes after it stops.

  • What should I do if my unit doesn’t work after a power outage?

After power is restored, units should restart automatically with all the previous settings preserved by the memory function. A time delay could interrupt the voltage to the unit for up to 10 minutes. If your unit doesn’t restart automatically within that time frame, contact a professional.

  • What is a Hybrid Heat Dual Fuel System?

    • Smart, flexible and efficient, a hybrid heat dual fuel system combines the strengths of a gas or oil furnace with a electric heat pump to deliver the comfort and efficiency you need in both warm and cold seasons to give you more control over your utility bills. As outdoor winter temperatures change, the system automatically switches between heat pump and furnace to utilize the most cost-effective fuel source and maintain greater efficiency.
    • Because a hybrid heat dual fuel system provides the flexibility to work with multiple fuel sources it provides additional protection from unpredictable fuel cost increases. The system is so efficient, its heating costs are generally less than with any gas furnace alone.
  • What should I do if part of my house (often the upper floor) doesn’t stay warm or cold enough?

A professional can work with dampers to make it seem like you have a second system that makes the environment throughout the space much more comfortable.

  • Is there a difference between HVAC and AC units?

HVAC (Heating, ventilation and air conditioning) units heat, cool, dehumidify and constantly refresh the air you breathe. Standalone AC units dehumidify and cool air, making them less versatile than HVAC units. A professional can work with you to decide which is more effective and efficient for your space.

  • What are the top things one can do to keep a unit working well?

    • Change your filters regularly to keep dirt and dust from getting into the system.
    • Keep your outside unit clean by taking a garden hose and spraying down the exterior and interior of your exterior unit, which will keep the inside coils clean. Just like the radiator in your car, the coils need to be clean to keep them from clogging.
  • Do I need to call a professional if my exterior unit has ice on it?

During the winter, exterior units may have ice on them. If your exterior unit has ice on it during the summer, it’s time to call a professional to troubleshoot the issue.
